July 4th fireworks cause anxiety in dogs. Can CBD be the fix?  Does your dog hide or seem anxious when thunder starts?  What about fireworks or less subtle noises like the vacuum?  Storms and other noises like fireworks, gunshots, and even the noise from the dishwasher can be upsetting and cause them to hide or even become destructive like chewing and digging.  This reaction may be a sign of noise phobia.

CAUSES

So why does your dog react so strongly to noise?  The problem can occur at any age, usually after the age of one.  Dogs may develop these “phobias” from either a bad experience or from the unknown.  The reactions can range from pacing, panting, trembling, drooling, hiding, or even chewing destructively as to soothe themselves.  Punishing these behaviors is never recommended and will only add another layer of fear.

During July 4th and other holidays, family and friends gather to celebrate, and fireworks is a preferred method of entertainment.   Most pet owners cringe at the upcoming holiday because they are afraid of how their dog will react.  Lynn, an owner of a Pointer states “I hated leaving him alone because he would find toilet paper, etc. to tear up as if doing that would help calm him down and I never knew what to expect when I got back home”.  This is just one example of the many situations that pet owners go through especially when fireworks are in season.

SOLUTIONS

Every dog reacts differently to loud noises such as storms and fireworks.  So, what are options for pet owners?  Some Veterinarians will prescribe medication, but for those owners who don’t want prescribed medication, there are different ways to cope.  One of the most popular and natural ways is CBD.  CBD, or better know as Cannabidiol, is just one of the many cannabinoids found in hemp but the most abundant. Dogs possess an endocannabinoid system that is composed of endocannabinoids that bind to cannabinoids.  This endocannabinoid system strives to maintain balance at a cellular level in the function of the brain, endocrine, and immune tissues.  Its regulatory role is seen in the secretion of hormones related to reproductive functions and responses to stress.

When dogs become stressed from loud noises, the CBD given will act to correct any imbalance that is occurring.  This relief can occur within a few hours or can take much longer.  Each dog is different so that is why trying the product for a few weeks is very important so that you will be prepared.

The good news is that pet owners are becoming more aware of CBD and requesting to find it, or shopping online has made it easier to purchase.  The relief that dogs have received is anecdotal but worth listening to.  CBD has helped dogs with all sorts of issues since Cannabinoids do not discriminate and want to help all problems that are occurring in your dog’s body.  So, whether it’s the anxiety due to fireworks and storms that is causing the problem, rest assure that all other struggles like arthritis in senior dog, CBD will want to tackle those ailments as well.

Overcoming these noise phobias can take time but luckily veterinarians are now becoming aware of the medicinal properties of CBD and able to suggest these products that are also natural and have more than just one benefit in taking them.
